The “stacked ranking” method of employee evaluation was made famous during Jack Welch’s turnaround of GE in the 1980s. Thousands of firms adopted the performance review process, but many have left it by the wayside in the years since. Why the wane in popularity? “They reached for an answer that worked for someone else,” said William Bogner of the Department of Managerial Sciences. “There is a desire to have a single, one-size-fits-all solution, and there is never one size that fits all,” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “There is no shortcut to good management of people.”
