Cities in which the economy relies on the success of a single industry were hit especially hard by the recession. Case in point: Dalton, Georgia. The “Carpet Capital of the World” lost more than 4,600 jobs, and many of the unemployed are still pounding the pavement. Rajeev Dhawan of the Economic Forecasting Center told the Associated Press that absorbing Dalton’s flooring sector workers will be a tall order. “To come out of that hole will require a brand new booming industry that is going bonkers.”
